They're called Danishes and not Swedishes for a reason

Sunday, April 19, 2009

We continued our journey in Copenhagen by taking a bus for some breakfast in Christianhavn called Lagkagehuset. We had read about this place and it was a place that Samantha Brown went on her travel show, and it seemed like it would be really good. That is an understatement. This place is a huge bakery, one where you have to take a ticket and wait for your number to be called (like the DOT but pleasant). While we waited we looked through the nearly 50 different pastries and breads that they had on display to decide what we wanted. Also to mention, something else that the Danish are known for is drinking chocolate milk with all of their meals. So, when our number was called we bought some Danishes (they just call them pastries, everyone else knows them as Danishes because the Danes make the best!!!), chocolate milk, coffee for Greg, and Vienna Breads (?). What a delicious breakfast.

After breakfast we found Waldo (Wally to some). Greg and Waldo enjoyed a coffee together:

With our sugar rush fully in swing we started walking. We walked up to the Vor Frelserkirke (church with the very cool winding spire on top), then to Christian's Kirke (another large church), and then onto a bus. While on the bus we went by the Bersen building again (the stock exchange building with the entwined spire of dragon's tails) before see the Fisher's Wife Statue. We got off the bus here and walked through the Latin quarter and by Trinitatis Kirke (the church with the round tower). Next we walked by Helligandskirken, yet another large church, and did a bit of window shopping along the way. It was still too early for lunch and for any shops to be open, most do not open on Sunday's anyway so not much was going to be done. We then ducked into an Italian Deli for a quick coffee for Greg.

We proceeded to jump on the S-bahn train to the Carlsberg Brewery. We got lost on the way and ended up having to take a taxi to get us the rest of the way. It wasn't nearly as close to the train station as we thought and we went left instead of right, oops. Oh well. We did the brewery tour and then got our free drinks while just relaxing and enjoying some peanuts. We even went by and took our pictures with the famous Carlsberg Elephants.

Carlsberg had over 15,000 bottles on display, so many different beers and countries:

Once we were done there we took a bus back to Radhuspladsen and had lunch at The Royal Cafe. This place was known for it's smushies. They are a cross between sandwiches and sushi, sort of. Unfortunately we didn't really get to have any because on Sunday's they only do a brunch menu and not their regular lunch menu. We were striking out with this place, we had tried to go for dinner the day before but they closed at a crazy time like 6 pm? No big deal though, we had their brunch menu, some soup, and 1 smushie (it was shrimp so Greg did not get any). We then did a bit of souvenir shopping before getting on the train to head back to the airport to fly back to London. Another great trip done.
