Land of Eden

Sunday, May 10, 2009
Our second day in Cornwall was going to be pretty exciting. We had breakfast at the hotel again, this is when we found out we were in the wrong dining room the first day but this time got our own table in the correct room. We then started to drive to The Eden Project. This is another place that I had been wanting to go to since we moved to London nearly 2 years ago. It looks like this land with 3 huge golf balls. What it actually is is the largest man made ecosystem in the world. There are 2 different biomes, 1 is Mediterranean and 1 is rainforest.

Eden Project biomes:

Some of the garden around the art on the outside gardens:

When we got to the Eden Project we walked through some of the outdoor gardens first and then went into the Rainforest. It was HOT, just like the real rainforest would be, very humid. We saw lots of enormous plants and trees as well as the biggest banana tree I have ever seen. There is even a waterfall and a re-creation of a hut in Africa inside. This place was much bigger than I had expected. We spent about an hour in the first dome alone.

Inside the rainforest biome:

Large spotted ivy:

Jackfruit, the largest fruit in the world, I believe:

I love the colors on this one:

We then stopped for some water, we needed to rehydrate, and then went into the Mediterranean biome. This one was beautiful, they had built walls to look like houses in Greece, all white washed with blue roofs with the very vibrant flowers around them. There were even cacti, grape vines, and citrus trees with the largest lemons I have seen (until I got to Italy at least). We spent another 45 minutes here and then decided it was time to eat.

Beautiful pink flower in the Mediterranean biome:

This lemon was close to the size of my head:

Such an array of colors from the mediterranean flowers:

Bird of paradise:

We ate lunch at Eden Project, enjoying another pasty (but the first one was still the best) and a jacket potato (baked potato) along with the Eden Project beer and Cyder. We then finished the exterior gardens and museum and then went to the gift shop and started our way down the road.

Me with the biomes:

A large sculpture made out of old electronics, the teeth are computer mice, and note the washing machines and all:

Our next stop was at Lanhydrock, which is a very nice palace. We took a tour inside and then walked the grounds. We grabbed an ice cream to have out on the front garden and then it was time to head back to London.

Lanhydrock Palace:

We got back to London at nearly 8 pm, after sitting in some traffic, but it was a great weekend. I wish we would have had more time in that area, it is unbelievable.

Yes, cows crossing a bridge over the highway:

On our journey we encountered at least 50 of these VW Vans:
