3rd times a charm

Saturday April 25, 2009

We made our 3rd trip to Munich, but this time it was for something specific....Neuschwanstein castle.

We flew in to Munich on Saturday, then took a 45 minute train trip to Munich central, then another 2 hours on a train to Fussen, where we were staying. Although the country side is absolutely beautiful and completely reminded us of The Sound of Music, I was ready to be done travelling. When we got to Fussen we checked into our hotel, Kurcafe, which is on the main square and absolutely beautiful.

Scenery from the train, there is no way you cannot tell me this looks like Sound of Music scenery:

After getting checked in we walked around town a bit and eating lunch at Rathaus Cafe. We had some traditional pork schnitzel (although they just call it escalope) and potato salad along with some german beer. It hit the spot. We then went shopping for a traditional dirndl and other souvenirs. A dirndl is the outfit that the german beer maids wear, I got one in pink and green, very cute.

It was very sunny and warm outside so we decided to stop for an ice cream break from Ital Eiscafe. After devouring our ice cream we walked over to Bergvesten und Talsperren, the castle in Fussen. While we were there the bells went off and it was so lovely to listen to. It's really interesting because the castle walls are all decorated with different window frames, borders, and textures, but it is all painted on. It looks very real and 3 dimensional but it isn't.

Part of the wall of the castle, just painted, not real:

Again, painted, not really 3 dimensional:

We then went to Basilika St. Mang (church) and then to the Cloister St. Mang courtyard before walking across the bridge to see the most beautiful yet odd blue water. We stood around enjoying the water for a bit before continuing our walk. We next hit Franziskaner kloster, a monastery with a very neat graveyard.

Very aqua water:

Once we were done walking around Fussen we headed back to the main square. There was a music festival going on so we hit Via to listen to the Latin band and have a beer or two. Kreg first got a Kaltenberg that was very bad before getting a Konig Ludwig Dunkel, while I enjoyed a Konig Ludwig Weissbier. We decided we didn't want to eat at Via so we went across the street to our hotel for dinner, it was nearing 9 pm at this point. We got pork with mushroom gravy and spatzle that was fantastic and another order of cheese spatzle. While in Germany you have to eat as much german food as you can, it isn't found in London much. It was a wonderful meal.

We were going to hit one of the other bands around town but it was getting late and we had had a long day so we just headed up to our room. Since our hotel overlooked the main square, and our room was on the front as well, we opened our window and just enjoyed the Latin band from across the street. We enjoyed it but it must have bothered some people. The hotel left ear plugs on everyone's door for them if they needed, but we did not. It was off to bed to get ready for the big day tomorrow.
