The Motorcycle Diaries (UK Edition) - Part 1

Saturday, September 2008

After months of struggling, we were finally able to get our motorcycles registered. Since the weather called for sunshine all day, we decided it would be a perfect time for a day trip on the bikes. We've been wanting to get out to Oxford for awhile, and it seemed like a good short trip to make, so we started early in the morning. Although the weather was nice, there was quite a chill in the air. We got on the motorway, intending to stop at the first service center we found out to put an extra layer on to warm up a bit. Unfortunately, the first service center that we found was about 10 miles from Oxford. We felt like ice cubes when we rolled up and took a quick break to warm up. After that, it was a quick and easy ride into town and we found some motorcycle parking. While we were at the parking area, we met some other bikers and talked with them for awhile.

We then headed into town and picked up tickets to do a movie walking tour. We had a few hours until the tour started, so we walked around town a little bit, looking around the outside of Christchurch mainly. We figured we should grab a bite to eat before the tour started, so we found a pub called St Aldates Tavern (although it appeared to also be called Hobgoblin Tavern also). Inside, we noticed that the owner of the pub was wearing a UGA shirt, so we had to talk to him. Turns out that a friend of his was in town and was actually starting to work at UGA this year. We met him as well and then grabbed some lunch (although no beer since we had to drive the motorcycles home) and then went to meet up with our tour.

The tour was pretty interesting, although we hadn't seen the majority of movies or tv shows that they showed locations for. A few that we had heard of were the Golden Compass and Brideshead Revisited. But it didn't really matter, all of the different colleges that we went to were interesting to see. We went through many of the colleges and the streets of Oxford which is a really nice town and we enjoyed the stories about Alice in Wonderland and how Lewis Carroll created it for the Headmasters daughter who's name was Alice. Going to Christchurch was the highlight for us since a lot of scenes from the first two Harry Potter movies were filmed there. We also walked by where they were filming something, but it was a tv show that we didn't know, so we didn't watch it for long.

The hall in Christchurch that was used in the Harry Potter films:

A tv show that was shooting... we didn't know the show or any of the stars, so we didn't watch for long.

Another pretty building called the Radcliffe Camera.

After that, we wandered around town for a little bit more, but didn't stay too long since we wanted to get back before it got dark. So we loaded up the bikes and headed back into London.
