Back in the USA

We know it has been such a long time since we put up a post, but nevertheless, we are catching up now. We had a great time back in Georgia, although it wasn't nearly long enough. We were so excited to get to see everyone that we did get to see, although there were still several people that we wanted to see that we didn't get to. Hopefully next time we will get to see more people.
I want to especially thank Chad & Marc for driving all the way down from Fort Mill, SC.

Some of the things that we did get to do (other than just see people) were to help Jenny celebrate her birthday, go to the Augusta Lynx game (for free), watch Carole be Peter Pan, shop, and eat lots of fabulous food that we miss so much. Just wanted to say hi again and thanks to everyone for putting up with us and our hectic schedule. Here are just a few pics from being home:

A Magical Weekend: Lunch with Professor Snape

Friday, February 15, 2008

Our first activity since returning from the States was to take a trip out to Leavesden Studios, which is where they film the Harry Potter movies. That was one of the coolest things that we have done since we've been here, being huge Harry Potter fans and all. We got there and had a coffee in the Canteen with the people that we were going to be walking around with. Ally guided us and the other 5 people around many places at the studio.

We started our tour walking by the crew and actors bicycles and the adult costume rooms, although we didn't get to go in. The group that we were touring with all do licenses for the children actors, therefore, they had to see where the education of the children takes places, so this is where we started out. We got to see where they have their classes during the day and where each of the actors (under 16) had their own personal rooms, including Bonnie's, who plays Jenny Weasley.

Our first major stop on the tour was to see the Great Hall, it was absolutely amazing to see in person. We felt like we were actually in the Great Hall of Hogwarts. They had just filmed a scene where the children were all eating, so there were crew members washing off all of the plates with the pink food leftovers, it was supposed to have been some sort of custard. Walking up to the front of the Great Hall where the teachers sit was even more impressive, you could see the floating candles, the house points counter, Hagrid's chair that was bigger than all of the others with the dots for the green screen, and so much more. Looking at all of the Hogwart's specific silverware, metal plates, and the cakes was so much more detailed than you get to actually see in the movies. Also, seeing the wall statues of the 4 houses was so cool, there were no candles on them lit but they said when they are lit it is more amazing than you can imagine. Once we walked out of the Great Hall we even got to see a cue card for Professor Dumbledore's welcome speech.

When we walked out of the Great Hall we walked into the hallways leading up to the Great Hall, they are all pretty much archways and stairs with green screen backdrops, not the complete thing, still the architecture that they put into the sets is outstanding. While we headed to our next stop we passed some backdrops along the way and we got to see half of Grop from the 5th movie, apparently some of the set guys had put him on top of the building as a joke. We walked by the exterior of Grimald Place and even Wool's Orphanage, which has not been seen yet. We then headed to our destination, car park 5. This is now a makeshift area for the children extras. It was divided into girls and boys, over 16 and under 16. We got to go into the under 16 boys dressing area and see lots of costumes, including the new Quidditch uniforms. It was kind of funny how it was set up, each child is assigned a number, and they have hangers with each of their outfits on them, there is even a picture of every child in each of their outfits.

We walked to the rest of the costume department, where you get to see more costumes, including ones for Slughorns Christmas party in the upcoming movie. We even met some of the ladies who have to wash, dry, and iron these clothes every single day, what a task. There were thousands of pieces of clothing laying around, I don't see how they do it. We also got to walk through the children extra's canteen area and classrooms. They are kept separate from the adults since there are so many of them and they are so loud, there were over 300 in the last movie.

Next it was back to the canteen for lunch. Everyone's lunch is between 11:30 and 2:00 and is on a staggered schedule. When we walked in the first thing we saw was Professor Snape (Alan Rickman) sitting at the head of a table with a group of people. It was so crazy to see him just sitting there, he is so tall and very impressive looking. Louise also told us he is the nicest actor, he is so friendly to all of the employees and is always willing to sign autographs and take pics with kids. We also saw Rupert Grint sitting at a table eating lunch with his runner, he plays Ron Weasley for those of you who don't know him. He looks so shy. We went through the line and grabbed lunch, chicken curry, and sat and ate lunch with Jamie. While there we saw a few other actors, including Bonnie again, and some of the doubles eating their lunch, along with lots of crew members. We went to look at Louise's cute Harry Potter bike that she drives around to the sets to put out drinks and snacks, while there we listed to Alan Rickman talk, he sounds just like Snape, I thought he would sound differently.

After lunch we looked at some glass display cases from each of the movie. They housed lots of memorabilia from each movie, including the Goblet of Fire, a beauxbatons dress, Umbridge's pink suit and cat plates, the dancing cactus of Neville's, and way too much more to mention everything. We headed outside and walked to Privet Drive, we even looked inside the windows of Number 4. All of the other houses are just fronts, no actual insides. Due to a parking shortage at the Studio, there were crew members who actually park their cars in the driveways of the houses of Privet Drive, it was kind of funny. There were actually 2 cars parked at #4. We continued our journey outside and saw where Durham Cathedral was being built for this movie. They can get those sets up so quickly and they look spectacular. We were going to go to Hagrid's hut but due to the construction on the Cathedral we could not go down there. Oh well, we walked by the Quidditch Pitch, it was kind of funny because the top half, including the quidditch rings, were all green screen, only the bottom half actually looked like the Quidditch Pitch.

Our next stop was back inside the studios where we got to see the interior of 2 cars from the Hogwarts Express. The room that housed the 2 cars was also the room that was formerly the interior to the Ministry of Magic. There were still some remaining set parts lying around, like the fireplaces and the statues from the fountain. Also was part of the interior of the cave for this movie and the outside of part of the Hogwart's castle that overlooks the lake, complete with bench and lamppost. There were crystals hanging in front of the lake backdrop to make the lake look like it was sparkling. There was even some leftover snow around the lamps and on the roof top from a previous scene. Looking inside the building that we were standing in front of you could see Christmas decorations and a tree stump decorated (we think for Slughorn's party). In the next room over they were doing a photo shoot on one of the brooms. We then continued walking through more halls of Hogwarts, we even saw the mirrors that were used in the Room of Requirements in #5.

Our next stop was completely unexpected but one of our favorite stops, inside the Weasley's house. Stepping inside the house was exactly what it looks like in the movie, small, cluttered, and very crooked. Your eyes were very distorted while in here, your mind knew something was not right. Some of our favorite things around the Weasley's house were the Pixie Puffs cereal, Owlieos cereal, the Family clock that shows each members whereabouts and if they are in peril or not, the fireplace where they used the flue powder, Hogwarts school trunks, Gilderoy Lockhart books, the long and narrow dinner table, and so many other things. We even walked up a level of stairs, when you look up there were many more levels above you, all getting more and more narrow and more and more crooked.

We walked across the way into Slughorn's office, he even had a Christmas tree outside his door. We joined another group here to listen to a guide that had lots of stories to tell. We continued our tour into Gryffindor's common room. There was a stuffed armadillo, a notice board with a poster for Weasley Whizzes, the great fireplace that had Sirius's head in it, and a large Gryffindor plaque above it, along with so many other things. We walked upstairs to the boys room, and even got to touch Harry's pillow, sheets, and curtains. The beds are made of solid wood and are so small. Ron's bed was a complete mess.

Next we walked over to see Dumbledore's office, this room was so detailed. We got to see the pensieve, the memory holder, pictures of the sleeping previous head masters, the telescope that is made from a B-52 bomber chair, lots of law books, and other astrological sculptures. We even got to sit in Dumbledore's chair, it was not very comfortable. The neatest thing in his office to me was the memory holder, it was about 5 tiers tall, gold and glass, and had thousands of little bottles in it, all labeled with different memories. There were some very unruly children with us at this point and all I could think was that they were going to knock this over, that would be a complete disaster.

Our last stop on the tour was to actually watch a scene being filmed. The scene included Professor Snape (Alan Rickman), Professor McGonagall (Dame Maggie Smith), Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint), and Hermoine Granger (Emma Watson), in which they are showing Snape the blue necklace. It was fun to watch, it took about 45 minutes. It was really cute, Emma was reading a book in between all of the takes. Once the scene was done we stood around for a while and watched the actors leave, Daniel is so much shorter than I had ever realized, maybe shorter than me. Overall we had a fabulous time, I will never ever forget it.

To continue our entertainment themed weekend, we went and watched an episode of Don't Froget the Lyrics being filmed, we were audience members. It was a lot of fun and not as long as I expected it to take.

A sheep and an elephant

Sunday January 6, 2008

We got up the next morning and realized that our trip was halfway over. It was going by too quickly. However, we still had the rest of the day, so we got up and walked over to meet the opentop bus. Our tickets we had bought the day before were good for 24 hours, so we could still catch the first bus. We made it and got to see the half of the tour that we had missed before. We rode it over until we got to the Royal Museum and decided we'd get off and have a look. We actually spent a lot of time there looking at everything. They even had Dolly, the sheep that was the first to be cloned.

A view of Edinburgh from the top of the Royal Musuem

After we finished up at the Museum, we decided to wander around on the Royal Mile a bit more and see if we could find anything for lunch. We eventually found a nice pub just in time since we were all famished. Dan got a bit more haggis, but none of the rest of us were brave enough and settled for nice normal things like hamburgers and nachos.

A bagpipe player

After lunch, we didn't really have a plan, so we just wandered around looking in the shops and exploring. We eventually ended up at the elephant house, which is where JK Rowling wrote most of the first Harry Potter book. We decided to stop here for a quick coffee (mainly to give Tami an opportunity to take pictures)

After that, we headed over to the National Gallery of Scotland. We looked around a little bit and there were some nice paintings and statues, but the most impressive was the statue of the Three Graces, which reminded us of the one at the Louvre. After the National Gallery, it was time to start looking for the bus back to the airport.

Slainte Mhath

Saturday January 5, 2008

We left Friday evening after work to fly to Edinburgh for a quick weekend trip. This trip was a little different since wee went with Dan and Rebecca, our relatives from New Zealand. We stayed in a little apartment close to downtown which was really nice and spacious, especially for the cheap price that we got it for! We didn't do much Friday night since we got in rather late and didn't want to be too tired.

Dan and Greg hanging with the natives:

We got up on Saturday morning and had breakfast in the apartment (which was provided!) and caught the Open Top Tour bus to go around town. We stayed on the bus until we got to the Royal Mile. We walked up the Royal Mile towards Edinburgh Castle until we got to the Whiskey Experience. We did the tour, which started out good (a whiskey tasting and you keep the glass), but the rest was just so so. They covered how Whiskey was made, but we already knew most of it from touring the distillery when we were in Scotland before. At the end, we went to the bar and Dan and I tried another whiskey. Also, Tami got me a really cool birthday gift.... a bottle of whiskey that was distilled the year I was born... 1975.

Tami and Greg in front of Edinburgh Castle:

After we left the Whiskey Experience, we headed up the Royal Mile until we got to Edinburgh Castle. When we got in, the first thing we did was to head to the cafe and have lunch. The food was good, though overpriced and the One o'clock gun went off while we were there (they fire a cannon at 1:00 everyday which used to be used by locals to set their clocks.) We walked around more and some of the highlights were Mons Meg... a huge cannon, a pet cemetary and the prison vaults. All of the architecture was amazing to see, but that was true of the whole city.

The pet cemetary at the Castle:

Tami at the Castle:

We were cold and tired by the time we finished, so we hopped back on the Open Top bus and rode around the city.... although we stayed downstairs where it was nice and warm. It ended when we got to the center of town, so we walked around a bit admiring the city and eventually made our way to a pub called Dirty Dicks where we got a beer (and the girls had tea.) We sat there for awhile and plotted what we were going to do for supper. We eventually decided on a place that was BYOW (Bring Your Own Wine), so we pick up some wine and headed over there. We were adventurous since we were in Scotland and tried haggis. I won't say what is in haggis here, but you can find out if you follow this link. It wasn't as bad as we were expecting, but we were glad we got a small order and split it between the four of us.

Tami and Rebecca:

Afterwards, we made the long walk back to our hotel and stopped off at a pub on the way back. It was fairly late by the time we were done, so we didn't stay up too long. Although, we did get to see a little bit of the Seattle Seahawks game.

Day for a parade

January 1, 2008

Greg and I woke up and decided that we didn't want to sit around all day, we would rather go to the New Years Day Parade that London hosts every year. We found a spot near Trafalgar Square, right near one of the performing posts, so that was good. We were about half way through the parade route so it only took about 30 minutes for the parade to reach us once it started, however, we did get there about an hour early so we had a a little waiting to do, no big deal.

This is the same parade the Greg and Jenny marched in when they were in high school, so it was good for Greg to see it from a different perspective. We enjoyed watching all of the bands, dance groups, floats, and the motorcycles (both Harley and Honda owners had groups in the parade). The one thing I will say is that we had an awesome band director. Mr. Brasco would never have let us march with music attached to our instruments or arms, and the lines on most of those bands was horrendous. The largest band only had 192 members, maybe half the size of the bands that we were used to marching in.

Band from Hawaii:

A very funny Scottish band (the played the bagpipes and such but it was an all Indian band):

One of the Harley's from the Surrey Harley Club (he even has an American flag):

One of my favorite groups was the dance group from Dallas, TX called the Wranglers, they did line dancing but they were very energetic. With about 10 floats left for us to see it began to rain, not a hard rain, just a slow steady rain, more annoying than anything. We stayed and watched the end of the parade and then decided to go to lunch.

The Wranglers dance group:

Another great group, they were the Chinese dragons:

There was a restaurant about a block away that we had wanted to try so we went there, the Texas Embassy Cantina, where we enjoyed fajitas and enchiladas. While it isn't the best Mexican food it was still pretty good.

We started heading back to our flat, stopped in at a few shops. and made it home a little after 6:00 pm to settle in and watch a movie.

Ringing in 2008!

December 31, 2007 into January 1, 2008

Although not quite what we had planned we had an awesome time!

Dan and Rebecca came over after work and we sat around and enjoyed some cheese, crackers, beer, and champagne before heading off to dinner. We had reservations at 8:00 pm at Jamon Jamon in Camden Town. We got there right around 8 and had some Sangria with our Spanish tapas, all of the food was excellent, with the exception of the first batch of croquettes that we got. We ordered Blue Cheese croquettes and instead they brought us Salmon croquettes, not quite the same. Oh well, we got the cheese ones and all was right again. The restaurant was very busy and they basically ended up ushering us out of the restaurant at 9:00 pm so they could refill the table, we figured we would be there hanging out until at least 10 but no luck.

Greg and I at Jamon Jamon:

We were going to go to Primrose Hill to see the fireworks but we really did not want to go there for 3 hours, so instead we went across the street to the "Spread Eagle" (a local pub) to hang out.

The 4 of us at the Spread Eagle:

Greg and I had eaten Sunday roast there the day before and saw that they were having a drag show, sounded like fun. So, we went in, grabbed a table, some champagne and beer and enjoyed the music. We then went into the main room, where the drag show was going on, and danced, laughed, talked, drank, and all until after 11:00 pm. About that time we noticed it was raining outside and at this point knew we were not going to Primrose Hill.

Dan and Greg, such posers:

Around 11:30 we left the pub to head back to our flat, we knew we would be able to see fireworks from there, even if they weren't the big ones at the London Eye.

Rebecca and I at the bus stop waiting for the bus (as you can see we are wet):

We got back with about 10 minutes to spare, opened another bottle of champagne and enjoyed the fireworks and setting off party poppers.

Rebecca and I setting off party poppers:

Happy New Year!

Not a way to end a vacation

Saturday, December 22, 2007

Today was supposed to be a nice, easy return home. It turned out to be anything but that. We woke at 5 am because our bus was to pick us up at 7:00 am. The bus did not arrive until 7:30 am. There were roughly 100 people on our double decker bus, and all of us were on the same flight back to London, which was good. We sat upstairs so we could enjoy the scenery, which was a bad choice, as it was boiling hot and only hot air was blowing out of the vents. It was roughly 15 degrees outside and I was wearing a tank top and still sweating on the bus, to give you a clue.

About an hour into our journey (total 3 hour journey to the airport) the boy right in front of me got sick, and it smelled so bad, I thought I was going to get sick as well. The heat just permeated the smell as well. So, the bus stopped for about 10 minutes so he could change clothes. While stopped the people on the top deck opened up the emergency hatches, we had been repeatedly telling the driver that it was too hot but he still had not done anything so we were all just trying to get any relief that we could. Of course he came up to the top of the bus, and shut them, telling us we could not have them open. Once back on the road, some people opened them back up anyways, we really needed the cool air at this point.

On the way to Saas Fee a week earlier, we made no pit stops in our 3 hour journey, today, when we are running an hour late, the driver decides to stop for 20+ minutes for a break. So, it was now 10:00 am (our check in time for our flight), and we are just getting back on the road, and we still have an hour plus journey left to the Geneva airport. We finally arrived around 11:00 am the airport, our flight is in 1 hour and it is international, not good. The driver dropped all 100 of us off (again about 1/3 of the plane on this bus) and we proceeded to go inside and check in. We could not find our check in terminal, AT ALL!!! Nobody at the airport could help us either. Finally, our tour guide came and found us, we were at the wrong terminal.

We walk to the correct terminal (about a 10 min walk), in which time we see the bus driver parking the bus in from of this terminal, we were not happy campers. We all trudged in to the check in desk, and our flight was CLOSED! Now, since it was a package deal we knew that they were not going to abandon 1/3 of their plane. We waited for them to open up the flight again and began the check in process. So, the Geneva airport has the worst layout I have ever seen. We had to take a shuttle from the check in area, over to the actual gate terminal, where we had to go through security and 2 passport checks. Finally, we had to then wait for a second shuttle that would actually take us to the plane. Our 12:00 departure was now pushed back to 12:45 at which time the captain came on and announced that we were going to have to wait another 40 minutes before we could take off. Greg and I were not even sitting together, so we really were not happy. I had a bratty kid sitting next to me the entire way, he kept staring at me, kicking me, putting his coloring book in my lap, and on and on.

Finally we had taken off, for our 1 hr flight to London, but it was well past lunch time and we didn't have much for breakfast so we were getting a little hungry. Once we took off the captain then announced that their food provider did not show up and therefore the crew had to scrounge around for food from other planes, and they were 40 short, so they needed volunteers to not eat. Greg and I were not willing to miss our lunch, since everything else had gone wrong, but there were enough volunteers and we did get to eat. Whew!

Oh well, all in all it was a GREAT trip that I would take again. We did finally make it home, and our dog sitter had already dropped the dogs off at our flat, so that made things even better for us, to see their wagging tails and all when we walked in.

Saas Fee is a "carless" town and all of the vehicles are small electrical cars:

We slept on Austrian double beds, which is just 2 singles pushed together, not very good:

My knees were completely black and swollen by the end of the week:

Back in the swing of things

Friday, December 21, 2007

Today started out as every other day during our trip to Saas Fee, woke up and had breakfast at the hotel before heading out to the slopes for snowboarding school. I (Tami) actually went back to class and stayed all day. I was very proud of myself for going back after my melt down.

Our instructor, Toast, took videos of us so we could see how our turns looked, we all got to watch each others, which was fun. I finally was able to make it up the ski lift, only fell off once the entire time, even though I still was not going to the top, and only about 1/3 of the way up. Greg on the other hand, was going up to the top and coming all the way down, he was doing great. At the end of class Toast gave each of us a snowboarding class book and marked our progress, Greg got an Excellent!!!, Tami got a Needs Work (duh!).

Greg and Toast at the end of class:

Toast's Snowboard (my two favorite colors):

After class we returned our snowboarding equipment and went to lunch at Zur Muhle (Moulin - a recommendation from Toast) and enjoyed clear broth soup, fondue, and the best Coke we have ever had. We knew we had an early bus to leave in the morning so we stopped in at a bakery (Beck) and picked up some pastries for breakfast. We then rode the sky bucket up Hannig again from some hot chocolate/beer, a banana crepe, and to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Hannig mountain.

One of the views of Hannig Mountain:

We had to return our ski lift tickets, so Greg did that while I began to pack, we had some free time before dinner and didn't want to stress about it later in the evening.

When Greg got back it was time for the hot tub, we sure will miss this. Then we got ready and headed to dinner early, we had plans for that evening. Once dinner was over we headed out for our Husky sled ride. We had 4 huskies pulling us: Shay, Duke (the only Alaskan husky), Arco, and Tina. All the dogs were so cute and we had a great time. The ride was short, since Saas Fee is so small, but it was still worth it. Greg even got to drive a little bit, though the dogs weren't nearly as responsive to him as they are to the regular guide.

Tami with the huskies:

Greg driving the dog sled:

Once done with the husky ride, we made our final trek back to the hotel. When we got to our room we enjoyed a bottle of wine before going to bed. Tomorrow was going to be a long day.

A day to forget for Tami

Thursday, December 20, 2007

We again woke up for breakfast in the hotel, this time a little slower and with a lot more pain. After breakfast it was the same routine, head down to the slopes for snowboarding class. Greg was doing great at class and enjoyed it thoroughly. I had a mental breakdown on the slopes. I went about 1/3 of the way up the slopes (which was my typical spot) only once but it took about 6 or 7 tries to get there, and managed to come down, with a lot of falls on the way and decided that today was NOT my day to be doing this. So, I left class to sit and enjoy some hot chocolate and watch the rest of class.

Some skiiers and boarders on the slopes:

Greg going up the lift:

Christina from our class:

Once class was done I met up with Greg for some lunch at Mistral where we had clear broth soup with cheese toast, spatzli with cream sauce and pomme frites (french fries). If you hadn't noticed yet Germans like their clear broth soup and so do we. Perfect for me, nothing to pick out of it.

I then decided to try to practice some snowboarding, see if I could get over my nerves. Greg did help me a little but I was still a bit on edge so we quit after only about 30 minutes. We walked around town and did a little shopping before heading back to the hotel.

We stopped at a nice clear spot and made snow angels then it was back to the hot tub for more relaxation.

Tonight was fondue night at our hotel so we enjoyed our salads and fondue along with some ice cream and wine. Then it was back to bed for an early evening.

Happy 9th Anniversary!

Wednesday, December 19, 2007 - Happy Anniversary!

We woke up this morning to get ready for class, again, but started with breakfast at the hotel. Then we headed down toward the slopes but stopped in first at a shop to buy hand and foot warmers. We then got to class but then Greg realized he had lost his ski pass, so he had to trek off for a replacement. He finally found his original one in his pocket.

Today was not a good day for snowboarding, at least for me. We moved to another slope in which I fell off the lift at least 5 times, before I finally gave up on class. I was so frustrated and upset that I had to give up on class about 1 1/2 hours early. Since it was our anniversary Greg left class early as well.

We decided to have a little fun and unwind so we headed up the sky buckets to Hannig Mountain where we did a 6 KM (3.728 miles) tobaggon down the mountain. It was so much fun and very fast, but not like what we had expected. It was really on the side of the mountain, you could fall down the side if you went to far over. We did have a blast.

Part of the tobaggon run:

Greg on his sled:

Tami on her sled:

We then went to Restaurant Tenne and had clear broth soup with croutons and some cheese fondue with our beer and wine. It was excellent.

Our lunch cheese fondue:

We headed back to the hot tub then a full body massage, that was much needed. After I (Tami) finished my massage I headed back to the room to get ready for dinner while Greg enjoyed his massage. Once he was done he got ready for dinner. We had to be at dinner at 6:30 because we had plans later that night. So, after dinner we went for a torch light walk through the forest, it was great. We each got to carry our own torch. We stopped ib the middle of our 1 hr 45 min walk to enjoy some local wine and fairy tales. After that it was back to the hotel for some shut eye and to get ready for the next day of class.
